I’m late again this week, but in my defense, I had no idea yesterday was Friday until after midnight today. Had the whole week off from work because most of that white in the picture above isn’t snow. It’s sleet. Ice takes a lot longer to melt down than snow, because the snow melts and solidifies to ice on top of the existing ice… I didn’t feel safe leaving the house until Friday, which is usually a day off for me, and even then, I worked during the day instead of afternoon/evening. All my schedules are off. I should be back to normal by next week.

News:

I can finally share the cover for In the Dollhouse We All Wait, and it’s freaking amazing. The artwork is by David Kozlovsky, and I got to get a glimpse of his sketches as he worked. I’m blessed beyond measure, as they say, to have indie horror art for Dollhouse.

I finished the final proofreading round of edits, thanks to the Icepocalypse, and I’ve been given an official release date of April 10, 2026.

Works in Progress:

After finishing the proofreading round for Dollhouse, I edited and submitted my flash fiction to Shallow Waters, then got hit with a short story idea for something with a deadline mid-February. I think the concept is better than the execution right now, but I’m still striving to finish, because maybe the execution can be fixed in edits. I would have liked to use the Icepocalypse to work on my double edit of Never & Forever (Meridian Book 8), but the timing just wasn’t right, sadly. The deadline for Dollhouse was much harder than the tentative deadline for the N&F edits. I’ll really have to buckle down when I finish this short story, though.

Books I’m Reading:

Raising Loki: A Memoir by Elliot Manarin
The Shining by Stephen King
Skeleton Crew by Stephen King

Things I’m Listening To:

Christmas playlist

Things I’m Watching:

My Norwegian Holiday
Bugonia
What Lies Beneath
The Bone Collector
Dante’s Peak
Truth or Dare
(2017)
9-1-1 series
9-1-1: Nashville series
Stranger Things series (finished)
Elsbeth series
Resident Alien series

Poem of the Week:

It is relief
not to feel
relief
I love
not to feel
love
a monstrous sensation
to feel monstrous
and not recoil
from my coils
give me cold blood
and armored scales
steal feeling
’til heart beats
still

News:

After a few weeks of nothing, some nice Halloween treats.

Contract is signed and other authors are sharing, so I guess I can say that my short storm horror story “The Glitter of Bile” will be published in Cosmic Horror Monthly in the new year.

“The Last Ride of Sutton Purnell” won a flash fiction contest from Flame Tree Press based on the theme ‘Nightmare Avenue.’ It appeared exclusively in their newsletter this week, but it should post to their website soon, too. Once I have that link, it will be free to read. It is absolutely gruesomely gross body horror, if you can stomach it.

The Crystal Lake Shallow Waters flash fiction contest theme for this month is Horror on Board (Boats/Ships/Subs), and my story “Arms Race” posts next Wednesday. It’s $5/month to read and vote, but it’s worth it to have a new themed anthology every month.

Earlier this week, I completed my fiftieth short story of the year! They range from micro fiction to novelette, so it all averages out.

I’m also on the short list for several calls that I’m crossing my fingers for.

Finally got to talk to an orthopedist, and she’s not alarmed by the strange overexertion, so I’ll try to endure it until I can get in to a physical therapist, who should be able to help the re-tear heal, then help me get back to a regular gait, and then the overexertion should calm down, in theory. I’m still getting quotes from PT facilities.

But in more pleasant news, I crossed another thing off my to-finish list with Nine Perfect Strangers. And I found a ten-dollar bill on a walk.

Works in Progress:

I submitted my short story collection, so now I have two short novels and a collection out in the world.

I finished the first edit of my other name’s Meridian Book 4 edits, and I’m well into the second, which always goes much faster. Afterward, I’ll palate-cleanse with a very short story or two, then jump into a pet project, probably In the Dollhouse We All Wait.

And in the midst of that, I do my daily flash poetry for the Crow Calls, a lyric poem every five days, and I’m working on an autumnal long poem for a seasonal poetry collection.

Books I’m Reading:

IT by Stephen King
Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire
The First Five Minutes of the Apocalypse edited by Brandon Applegate

Music I’m Listening To:

Halloween playlist
Taylor Swift
Fifty Shades movie soundtracks (never read the books or saw the movies, love the soundtracks)
Fight Like a Girl by Emilie Autumn
UNSECRET singles

Things I’m Watching:

The Addams Family
The Nun
No One Will Save You
Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark

Halloween Wars series
Halloween Baking Championships series
Outrageous Pumpkins series
CSI series
CSI:Miami series
Buffy the Vampire Slayer series
Scream Queens series
Nine Perfect Strangers series (finished)
Under the Banner of Heaven series

Poem of the Week:

i would never be accused of
wallowing in my own sorrow
but may i render this ground
unhallowed with dripping salt
seeping into the ground soil
downhill of the cursed gallows
from where the mortician carries
my son to grave upon the morrow

Bloody Ghost wants you to have a boo-tiful day.

News:

In case you missed it, pregnancy horror drabble (100-word micro fiction) “Birth” was posted for Hungry Shadows’ Deadly Drabble Tuesday earlier this week. This one started its life as a poem but was actually shortened for the drabble call.

“A Bladder Full” actually won 3rd place for the July Crystal Lake Shallow Waters flash fiction contest (theme: Time Anomaly), which really surprised me. This month, creature feature “A Bug in the Design” is a finalist for the theme Small Town Strange. I see a lot of new-to-me names on the list of finalists, so I’m looking forward to the contest introducing me to different writers. You can only read them under the $5/month tier, but it’s totally worth it to have what amounts to an anthology of flash every month, and it’s a lot of fun.

Jacob Steven Mohr announced the Table of Contents for Dead Letters: Episodes of Epistolary Horror, an anthology of found media (also from Crystal Lake Publishing), and my moreishly titled “The Behavioral Patterns of the Displaced Siberian Siren” is a part of it. I’ve been trying to sell this story for a bit, and I’m really excited for this anthology in general. Some of the titles are really funny and intriguing. Check out the TOC for some of the other contributors.

In addition, it was announced through their Facebook page, so I assume it’s okay to share that my flash piece “Sight Unseen” about a monster in a fixer-upper is part of Dragon’s Roost Press’s Novus Monstrum anthology.

Look at that, though. A lot of announcements this week of things to come, mostly in the very smol fiction range, but it’s nice to have some momentum.

Also, I’ll periodically let you know that I now have a Ko-Fi page, if you want to caffeinate an indie writer. A chai latte or iced mocha is one of my only vices.

Works in Progress:

I’m still working through the first round of edits on Crooked House (T5), and it’s a little more involved than I anticipated. The first quarter involved a lot of cuts, but I haven’t needed as many in the second and third quarter. If I add anything significant, it’ll be in this third quarter or the fourth. I’m still weighing whether it’s necessary. I might just finish out this edit, then come back to add as needed.

I have one small short story to write between editing rounds. Then I’ll dive back in for the polishing pre-professional edit, which I hope moves a little more quickly.

Books I’m Reading:

IT by Stephen King
Nightbitch by Rachel Yoder
Discount Armageddon by Seanan McGuire

Music I’m Listening To:

Sara Bareilles randomizer
Apocalypse and Chill by Delain
Arcadia by Eurielle
Arcadia by Lily Kershaw
Arrival soundtrack
Beauty and the Beast Broadway soundtrack
A Bit o’ This & That by Emilie Autumn
The Black Halo by Kamelot
Born This Way by Lady Gaga
Bram Stoker’s Dracula soundtrack
Breakaway by Kelly Clarkson

Things I’m Watching:

Scream series (finished)
CSI series
CSI:Miami series
Great British Baking Show: Junior Bake-Off series
Blacklist series (finished)
Black Butler series (finished)
Young Sheldon series (caught up)
Not Dead Yet series
The Huntsman: Winter War movie
Disenchanted movie
Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie

Poem of the Week:

hysteria
from the same root
as hysterectomy
defect of the uterus
emotional fit
of a tilted fist
abdominal dissension
no more trustworthy
than upset stomach
irrational these
emotional outbursts
with raised fists
and defections
vestigial as
appendices
post-appendectomy
can’t live with them
can’t live without them
and they can’t live without us
am I right
one root to another
what lunacy to need
lunatics
or leave them
to tidal devices
varied and variable
ephemeral as moonbeams
do what we can
as rational men
to ignore

For winning their March 2023 Shallow Lake flash fiction contest with bloody reality-show parody “The Cut”, Crystal Lake Publishing interviewed me for their Patreon Author Spotlight. The story is covered under the $5 subscription to their Patreon (or 30-day free trial), but the interview is free to read. (My head is really big on my computer screen at the link, but don’t let that scare you.)

They do this flash fiction contest every month, themed and unthemed, so the subscription basically gets you a flash fiction collection per month, which is pretty neat.
